When the Clocks Fall Back, Mission Trails Runs on a Shorter Day

Starting Sunday, Nov. 1, a weekday visitor parked in a Mission Trails Regional Park lot will have one hour to walk Father Junipero Serra Trail end to end. Two schedules cause it. Construction crews close through access on the trail until 4 p.m. on weekdays, and when daylight saving time ends the park's parking lots begin closing at 5 p.m. For Allied Gardens, the full run of the park's river corridor now falls mostly on Saturday and Sunday mornings, which is also when the park schedules its free programs.

Two Clocks on the Same Trail

The first clock belongs to the East County Advanced Water Purification Project. According to the Mission Trails park projects page, there is no through access for park users from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays between Gate 1, near the Visitor Center, and Gate 10 at Old Mission Dam. That restriction runs until spring 2027. You can still walk the trail during work hours, but you have to turn around when you reach an active construction site. After 4 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, the whole trail is passable, and excavations are fenced off outside work hours.

The second clock is seasonal. The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation's October newsletter says the Visitor Center lot already closes at 5 p.m. Starting Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks fall back at 2 a.m., the park's other lots also move from a 7 p.m. close to 5 p.m. The newsletter asks visitors to have their cars out before the gates close.

Combine the two and a weekday afternoon after Nov. 1 looks like this:

Weekday time block

Father Junipero Serra Trail, Gate 1 to Gate 10

Park lots other than the Visitor Center, from Nov. 1

7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No through access; turn around at work sites

Open

4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Full length passable

Open, closing at 5 p.m.

5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Full length passable

Closed; until Oct. 31 these lots stayed open to 7 p.m.

Before Nov. 1, the time after construction ended and before the gates closed ran three hours. After Nov. 1 it is one hour. On weekends, the construction rule doesn't apply, so the only limit is the 5 p.m. gate.

A Pipe That Ends Near Conestoga Way

The construction is easy to see once you know what it is. A large temporary bypass pipeline sits above ground along the length of Father Junipero Serra Trail. It starts at the trail's east end near the campground, runs through the park, comes out onto Mission Gorge Road, and follows Mission Gorge Road down to Conestoga Way. The park projects page puts its length at about 20,500 linear feet, roughly 3.9 miles, and says it will stay in place until 2028.

The bypass carries flow while crews rehabilitate an existing sewer line under the trail, using sliplining and open-cut methods. At trailheads and intersections inside the park, the bypass runs underground so those access points stay usable. Crews are also raising the pipe on extra blocks so animals can pass underneath. Open excavations get ramps after hours so any wildlife that falls in can climb out.

Those dates mean the pipe will outlast the weekday restriction. The weekday turnarounds are scheduled to end in spring 2027, and the pipeline itself is expected to stay through 2028. Work sites move as the project goes on, so the project's interactive construction map is the most reliable way to check where crews are before you head out. Questions go to [email protected].

The Weekend Mornings Already Have a Schedule

On weekdays, the hours lost to construction and the earlier gate come mostly out of the afternoon. On weekends, the morning hours stay open, and the park's volunteer program has been built around them for a long time.

The Mission Trails guided nature walk page lists a standing set of free interpretive walks. They are open to the public, need no reservation, and are canceled if it rains. November 2026 opens on a Sunday, so the park's regular pattern puts its Saturday walks on these dates:

  1. Saturday, Nov. 7: A wildlife tracking walk with the MTRP Tracking Team, 8 to 10 a.m., starting at the Ranger Field Station at the East Fortuna Staging Area.
  2. Saturday, Nov. 14: A walk from the Kumeyaay Lake Campground Entry Station, 8:30 to 10 a.m. It covers the Grasslands Trail, a Kumeyaay grinding rocks site, and the Old Mission Dam overlook.
  3. Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21: Bird walks, 8 to 10:30 a.m., at a location posted on the calendar each month. On Saturday afternoon, a family discovery walk runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground shade structure. These family walks take July through September off, so this is part of their fall schedule.
  4. Saturday, Nov. 28: The second Kumeyaay Lake walk of the month, again 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Visitor Center walks run every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Guides choose among the Oak Grove Loop, with its coast live oaks and rare Engelmann oaks, the Visitor Center Loop, and the Grinding Rocks Trail. Walks meet in front of the Visitor Center. Because these walks follow a standing pattern, the Mission Trails events calendar is the place to confirm a date before you go.

Two of these walks pass the construction corridor. The Kumeyaay Lake walk starts near the trail's east end, by the campground where the bypass begins, and heads toward Old Mission Dam, which is the Gate 10 end of the weekday closure. On a Saturday morning, that whole stretch is open.

The Weekend Everything Lands at Once

Nov. 14 is the most crowded day on the November calendar. That Saturday, the second-Saturday Kumeyaay Lake walk starts at 8:30 a.m., and the annual Mission Trails Holiday Marketplace opens at the Visitor Center at 9 a.m. The foundation describes the marketplace as a chance to shop local and find unique gifts. It runs both Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the foundation has a reminder sign-up page.

The marketplace closes at 3 p.m., two hours before the gates. The Visitor Center lot is the one that has closed at 5 p.m. all along, so a Sunday afternoon at the marketplace runs on the same timing it always has. The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., which matches the lot. It has a gift shop with books and Mission Trails items year-round and closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. That puts the month's one Visitor Center closure on Thursday, Nov. 26.

A Second Crew Working the Same Ground

The pipeline isn't the only long-running project in the park. In a September 2026 update, the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation reported that its contractor, RECON Environmental, has removed 62.02 tons of green waste since September 2024. That is 29 forty-yard containers, which the foundation compares to the weight of about 31 passenger cars. The invasive vegetation management and habitat restoration covers about 756 acres. A $1.8 million award from the San Diego River Conservancy pays for the work, and the grant runs through fall 2027.

Both projects have long timelines. Brush work is funded through fall 2027, the weekday trail restriction ends in spring 2027, and the bypass pipe stays until 2028. The one-hour weekday window lasts until the trail restriction lifts in spring 2027. The weekend walk schedule follows its standing pattern the whole time.

On the first Saturday after the time change, Nov. 7, the wildlife tracking walk leaves the East Fortuna Staging Area at 8 a.m., and the full length of Father Junipero Serra Trail is open until the gates close at 5 p.m.
