Saturday, October 3, puts three of the neighborhood's biggest fall events on one calendar square. The North Park Book Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taste of North Park runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then the South Park Fall Walkabout takes over from 5 to 9 p.m. Each event lists on its own page, and none of those pages mentions the other two.
Seen as one day, the three events share an unusual feature. Almost none of them happens on a stage. A bookstore produces the morning. The Taste pours its drinks inside optometrists, toy shops and clothing stores. The evening belongs to a business district, and it ends in a bar you reach through the back of a restaurant. On October 3, the storefronts are the venue.

The Closure Draws the Map
The day's layout starts with the street closures. MTS lists the closure as 30th Street from University Avenue to Gunn Street, along with North Park Way from Ray Street to 29th Street. That's the stretch where the North Park Thursday farmers market sets up between Ray Street and Granada Avenue, so the block will look familiar to anyone who shops there.
The Taste organizers tell guests to arrive early because of the 30th Street closure. Their parking guidance points to the North Park Parking Garage, which you enter from 29th Street. Both the Taste and the book fair listings name MTS routes 2, 6, 7 and 10 as the way in. The organizers also warn that the day is expected to be hot. Mini water bottles will be handed out at check-in, and they recommend bringing your own water too.
A Bookstore Opens the Day
Verbatim Books, at 3793 30th Street, produces the book fair itself. That's why the morning feels like a shop that spilled into the street. According to the MTS event listing, the day includes:
- Bookish vendors, including independent bookstores, publishers, comic book artists and local craftspeople, selling everything from rare books and graphic novels to handmade literary goods
- A DJ throughout the day
- The returning costume contest, with categories for adults, kids and pets, judged on literary characters and bookish costumes
- Sketch and drawing tables with art supplies for all ages
- Story time and kids' readings in the morning
- Local food and beverage vendors
The morning readings run before the Taste opens at 11. That makes the first hour the easiest one for anyone bringing children, since the alcohol pours down the block are limited to guests 21 and over.
Verbatim doesn't treat the fair as its only community event of the season. The shop also lists a first-Saturday North Park Community Fair series, with November 7 billed as "Shop North Park" and a Creator Fair planned for December.
Fifteen Sips, Most of Them Poured in Shops
North Park Main Street runs Taste of North Park, and this year is billed as the 15th annual edition. Tickets are $50 for food only, $65 for food and sips, and $85 for a Shareable Sip Ticket. The program covers more than 50 food tastes and 15 beverage sips.
The sips are where the day's theme shows most clearly. The organizer's list of sip locations is mostly retail: A7D Creative Group, AKA, Bottlecraft, Cave of Wonders, David's Daughter, Gingerly Wax, Granada House, Lixir, North Park Optometry, Our Story, Overload, Pigment, Replay Toys, Revival Eyewear and Speakeasy Clothing, plus North Park Mini Park. Pours from AleSmith, Kairoa, Mike Hess, Fall Brewing, Pizza Port and Seek Beer Co., along with Babe Kombucha and Bivouac Ciderworks, will be pouring among eyeglass frames, candles and vintage toys. A sip route is really a shopping route.
Mini Park is the only place to pick up tickets on the day. Sip ticket holders need a valid government-issued photo ID at check-in.
The food side reads like a survey of the corridor, from established spots to this year's arrivals. The bites list includes A L'Ouest, Bacari, Big City Bagels, Caffé Calabria, Encontro, Falafel Heights, Finca, Lou's Deli, Mabel's Gone Fishing, Moniker Outpost, Mr. Moto Pizza, Redwing Bar, Rumi Wine Bar, Shank & Bone, U-31 and Working Class, among others. Finca, a wine bar and bottle shop, made Wine Spectator's international list of Editors' Favorite Wine Bars in its October 31, 2025, issue.
The Summer's Newcomers Make Their First Taste
Two names on the bites list weren't on University Avenue a year ago. Both are bringing a festival tasting to neighbors who may not have walked in yet.
One of Us opened July 16 at 3085 University Avenue. It took over the former URBN Pizza space, and co-owners Kerry Pierce, Patricia Seabold and Kalani Millsaps built it as a bar and community venue for women's sports. Eater describes professional women's soccer, basketball, ice hockey and softball streaming daily, with men's games added for big occasions. The menu runs to coal-fired wings and coal-fired pizza on 72-hour fermented dough, including a pie called She Reigns Supreme.
A few doors east, Carne and Hueso at 3140 University Avenue, #102, is the second restaurant from sisters Chantelle and Crystal Godinez, who also run Sunday Breakfast Society in Chula Vista's Eastlake. The kitchen focuses on Indigenous dishes from Puebla, Jalisco and Oaxaca. That means moles blanco, negro and rojo, huitlacoche tetelas, and a birria based on a family recipe from their grandfather's restaurant in Guadalajara. On weekend mornings, the first dozen tables get complimentary pan de muerto from the kitchen. A Taste bite on October 3 is a preview. The same counter serves weekend brunch the next morning.
South Park Takes the Evening
The Taste ends at 4. One hour later, the South Park Business Group's Fall Walkabout starts. The group describes the Walkabout as an evening of local shopping, promotions, treats and community activities across the business district, running 5 to 9 p.m. The pattern from the afternoon carries over, with shops serving as hosts instead of backdrops. The Book Catapult, at 3010-B Juniper Street, has DJ Shoeshine on its calendar for the evening. So the day that opened with a DJ at one independent bookstore closes with a DJ at another.
For a last stop, the newest room in South Park is hidden inside an older one. Throne Room, from the team behind Kindred and Mothership, sits behind a chain-mail curtain at the back of Kindred, 1503 30th Street. The idea dates to 2017, when Kindred made a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired placemat map for Coachella that showed a hidden space beneath the restaurant. The finished bar is built around a 90-minute seated experience with 12 cocktails, six nonalcoholic elixirs, house tea, wine and ale. Its Mystic Mezze menu includes whipped fava bean dip with grilled flatbread and a cave-aged cashew brie. Eater calls reservations highly recommended, so a walk-in after the Walkabout is a gamble on a Saturday like this one.
The Observatory North Park, at 2891 University Avenue, has comedian Jessica Kirson booked the same night, for anyone who wants to end the day back up the hill.
The Same Storefronts Carry the Rest of the Fall
After October 3, the season keeps running through the same small businesses and the same small park:
- Saturday, October 10, noon to 4 p.m. The North Park Halloween Party returns to 3812 29th Street, the Mini Park address that serves as Taste check-in. It features live entertainment, pumpkin decorating and a costume contest.
- Sunday, October 18, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. South Park's daytime Trick-or-Treat brings candy, costumes and activities to participating businesses, with more details still to come.
- Saturday, November 7. Verbatim's first-Saturday fair series is billed as "Shop North Park."
- Sunday, November 8, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The South Park Fall Cleanup gathers neighbors, businesses and volunteers on streets and sidewalks. Sign-ups are still to be announced.
- Saturday, December 5, 5 to 9 p.m. The Winter Walkabout brings holiday shopping and seasonal treats to South Park.
- Sunday, December 6, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. SoNo Fest & Chili Cook-Off sets up at 32nd and Thorn streets.
Between those dates, the North Park Farmers Market keeps its Thursday schedule, 3 to 7:30 p.m. on North Park Way. Organizers for several of these events note that details are still coming. The October 18 Trick-or-Treat and the November cleanup are worth checking with the South Park Business Group closer to the date.
A neighborhood whose biggest Saturday is hosted by a bookstore, a dozen boutiques and a restaurant's back room says a great deal about the value of the buildings along 30th Street. At Jeff Davidson Group, we follow how these storefront corridors shape the homes around them.
